Closed Mindedness Can Be Virtuous

“An open mind is really a mark of foolishness, like an open mouth. Mouths and minds were made to shut; they were made to open only in order to shut.” (Illustrated London News October 10, 1908)

“The object of opening the mind, as of opening the mouth, is to shut it again on something solid.” (Autobiography)

G.K. Chesterton

  • Dad said many times that God gave you two ears and one mouth. Seems like you should listen twice as much as you speak. A lesson I am still learning to this day.

    • Yes he did. Dad also said, or actually wrote down, as the first thing of ten important lessons your children should be taught, was, “That you can’t legislate morality.”

      • I would love to see the entire list, sorry if you have already posted it. I am working my way through all the posts from most recent to earliest. Thank you, Frank

        • Morning, Frank. Our Dad never completed the list of ten as he passed away. From that one lesson, though, many flow.
